fresh fish
Monday, December 15

heh today we had fresh fish for dinner. and when i say fresh, i mean killed on the same day fresh.

it all started in the afternoon. while driving back from our trip to a waterfall, we decided to stop at a salmon and trout farm to buy some salmon to eat sashimi for dinner :D

the farm was quite deserted i must say... and the lady manning the counter was like some blur queen! dont even know anything about their own farm. we asked her, "do you have any fresh salmon we can buy?" and she was like, "err... yea... i think so..." so we asked if we could go and see the fish first, and she was all, "erm, i'm not sure we have any... salmon... that you can see..." and i was like what crap is she spouting? then finally a guy swooped in and said, "yea we do, come along i'll show you guys around the back" what a stupid girl man... dont even know her own farm produce? tsk tsk tsk.

so the guy took us out to where they kept the salmon. the water wasnt clear, so we couldnt see the salmon, so the guy just took a net, and he stared at the water for a while, then he swooped down his net and immediately fished out a salmon! like so pro! then while the salmon was still squirming around, he used his bare hands and grabbed it by the tail and said, "this one's probably about 2.3kg?" then we took it back to weigh, where he whacked its head to stun the salmon, and it was 2.4kg! wah his estimation was so pro man.

so after that he started gutting the fish and everything. and it was still alive! oh my goodness i felt so bad for the fish, having to feel all that pain! if only it could be killed before all the gutting happened. he scaled the stomach area so that the knife could slice through, then he slit the stomach open, and cleaned out the guts with a spoon, then gave the insides a thorough spray. i wonder how much of the whole process the fish could feel... must be so terrible!

i mean just imagine the same thing happening to us... we're dragged into water, and we trash about, then we're grabbed by our legs and held upside down. then we're knocked on our head, and then a sharp knife is used to get off any hairs and dead cells along the epidermal layer of your torso. then the knife slits from your neck right down to your pelvic area, and then your organs inside, from your windpipe, gullet, lungs and all right down to the bowels and intestines. and all this while you're still in the water too! so freaky!

so anyway after that, we asked the woman whether there are other salmon/trout farms around, then she was her blur self, "wh-whaaat? oh. erm. i dont really know. are there other farms adrian?" thats the guy's name apparently. then the guy was funny and all, "don't tell them about our competition!" haha. total opposites of each other. the guy speak SOOOOOO fast and he knew a lot about what they did. then the woman just stand there doing dunno what. totally useless haha. must be a family business, if not she would have been fired long time ago!

so we had nice sashimi for dinner :D except that we didn't have good sashimi sauce, so it wasnt that nice... lol, but i ate it plain. much better than with the terrible sauce.
